American citizens have the opportunity to serve on juries, vote in elections, run for office, and participate in public education. The Declaration of Independence affirms “that all men are created equal;” however, Americans have not always shared equally in the rights and responsibilities of citizenship. Tennessee history is replete with groups and individuals who expanded access to participation locally, statewide, and nationally through their actions.
